About this Event

Drawing the Frontline

Our online series of live War Art Talks will take place on Zoom.

Hosted by Company of Makers co-founder Rachel, with special guest, professional Artist, Pete Codling who'll share his insights into this fascinating aspect of art.

Talk 4 of 10: Drawn from the Field

Reconnaissance is essential, and before cameras and drones and satellites, a pen and pencil were very useful. Probably still are. But as well as mapping terrain and taking notes, soldiers have also stopped to draw ‘pictures’. Some have returned to the battlefield using their imagination, drawn from memory. But that isn’t were the drawn line stops. The battle lines are a constantly moving jigsaw of borders, of politics, religion and power. Often drawn with a line across a map, often arbitrary, rarely agreed, and occasionally in war, re drawn again and again. Perhaps a war has and could be caused by the slip of a pencil, by an accidental war artist. Lets look at a few artists and investigate the power of the images, drawn from the field. Is the pencil mightier than the sword?

Let's look at some of these amazing artists and ask...

"How does war affect art and vice versa?"
