40 - Gwaunmeisgyn Primary School Outdoor Project 2 - Beddau - 25 Volunteers...
Fri 12 May 2017, 09:00 – 17:00 BST
Gwaunmeisgyn Primary School is in the community of Beddau in Rhondda Cynon Taf. There are 315 pupils on roll between the ages of three and eleven, including 37 full-time nursery pupils. There are ten mainstream classes for pupils from nursery to Year 6. There are also two classes that cater for up to 18 primary school aged children who have severe and complex learning difficulties. Most mainstream pupils come from the local community, but the pupils in the learning support classes come from across the county.
The school would like employee volunteer support to maintain the viewing platform which allows pupils access to the pond. The wood requires cleaning off and treating with wood preserver. The pond also requires some clearing of pond weed. There is however lots of frog activity in the pond at present, the situation would have to be reviewed closer to the time of the volunteer day to decide if the weeding can go ahead. Late summer early autumn is said to be the time of year which will cause least disruption to pond life.
The school would like to create a path around the reed bed which is next to the pond. The area is currently very boggy and not suitable for the children to use. The path does not have to go all the way around the reed bed and the type of path could be discussed with the school.
Additional activities available include fence painting and painting the wooden structure of a shelter which provides rain cover over an entrance to the school yard.
Volunteers could also complete the painting of railings around the car park which has been started but still has a large section left to complete. Also there is an indoor area of the school which has been painted with some artworks, however the school finds the paintings too dark and would like the area lightened up.
As the school has a very limited budget, volunteers may have to help contribute toward the cost of tools and materials
