Becoming an Ethnographer: from Robotic Questionnaires to Participant Observation
ABSTRACT: Judith Okely traces, through direct experience, contrasts between questionnaires set by distanced managers and direct participation. The presentation confronts research employment in Cowley, Oxford through fieldwork as ‘wife’ in Western Ireland, to living on English Gypsy camps and hand milking cows in Normandy. Her book Anthropological Practice: Fieldwork and the Ethnographic Method (2012) explores commonalities and contrasts in fieldwork around the globe by anthropologists of 16 nationalities.
