Event description

Description

Action for Children is offering this one-day training course to enhance the knowledge of early years practitioners about a ‘heathy, balanced and nutritious’ diet for children aged 6 months-4 years; the Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England; and to gain ideas for practical food-based activities, including cooking with children. The training is part of the Eat Better, Start Better programme, which is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health, and is delivered by our experienced team of Registered Nutritionists and cookery trainers.

The training aims to give delegates:

  1. Increased knowledge about a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet for children aged 1-4 years, and how to apply this to different meals and snacks and provide food to meet the needs of babies aged 6-12 months.

  2. Improved understanding about healthy packed lunches, and communicating this information to families.

  3. Greater knowledge about the Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England.

  4. Improved knowledge and confidence for setting up and running cooking activities with children and cascading evidence-based nutrition information and resources to parents and carers to encourage them to cook a variety of meals from scratch.

  5. Confidence in practical cookery skills to use with children, and modifying recipes for families.

  6. Ideas for a range of practical activities to run with children and families.

Why should someone from our setting attend this training?

  • To support staff to understand how to fulfil the EYFS welfare requirement that meals and snacks should be ‘healthy, balanced and nutritious’, and meet the Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England.

  • To increase staff knowledge about, and understanding of, what a healthy diet for children aged 1-4 years and babies 6-12 months consists of, and how to cascade this to families.

  • To help answer common questions about portion sizes and managing special diets, including providing food allergen information.

  • To support their setting to adopt and demonstrate a whole setting approach to healthy eating, in line with Ofsted’s Common Inspection Framework

  • To provide ideas for a.range of food, nutrition and cookery activities that can be run with children and families

  • To gain hard and electronic copies of resources to support the setting to improve their approach to food, and run activities with children and families.
