Event description

Description

Simulation based mastery learning (SBML) for practical procedures is a highly effective way of improving confidence, and competence in skill performance, and there is a growing body of evidence that it reduces complications, and improves patient safety.

Because the procedures should be the same wherever they are practised across Scotland, it makes sense to use a standardised approach to the teaching, and it makes sense to develop a National Mastery Learning Programme.

Since the last meeting which was in Edinburgh in September 2017, progress on nationally agreed material has been slow, but there have been several local and regional initiatives. The conference in April will: examine successes and failures in Scotland so far. It will look at the model used for SBML and how this may be adapted for use at undergraduate level. It will also examine the role of the tutor, and ask the question ‘What is an Expert?’

The conference is aimed at anyone that has an interest in Medical Education, and in particular simulation based teaching. Although the conference will build on the material presented and discussed at previous conferences, all those with an interest are encouraged to attend even if they are completely new to this area.
