Treat yourself to a peaceful break in the North York Moors and learn mindfulness meditation in a week! 


Overview

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a group course which teaches mindfulness meditation as an effective and dependable counter-balance to the stresses of life.  This course aims to develop life skills (rather than providing a ‘quick fix’), thereby promoting a greater awareness of ourselves, others and the world around us, as well as a greater capacity to manage stress and improve attention. 

Traditionally, MBSR courses introduce mindfulness meditation techniques gradually over an eight-week period.  Our "intensive" MBSR course provides a unique opportunity to accelerate this learning process through a comprehensive 5-day programme in a private venue where participants are supported to fully immerse themselves in mindfulness.


What to Expect

The MBSR Intensive course is taught in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with a maximum of 10 participants, and includes guided sessions, group discussions, practical exercises and free time for independent practice.  Over the week delegates are introduced to different forms of mindfulness meditation practice, including:

  • An Introduction to Meditation - Why spend hours doing nothing?
  • Awareness of Awareness - The key to living in harmony
  • Brain Basics - Making the most of evolution
  • The Mind/Body Connection - The power of thought and state of mind
  • Mindful Perception - How the brain creates our mental world
  • Mindfulness in Relationships - Integrating our mental world with others


Each session is backed by sound scientific research and presented in an easy to understand format. Participants also receive a course workbook and meditation recordings to support future practice and the integration of mindfulness skills into their daily lives.

Who can Attend

This course is suitable for beginners, as well as those wishing to refresh their mindfulness practice. 

We have a diverse range of participants on our MBSR courses, from students and parents of young children, to corporate directors and healthcare professionals.  Participants join for a variety of reasons; from simply taking the time to prioritise their wellbeing, to those who wish to adopt a complementary approach to managing health concerns such as high blood pressure, IBS, CFS/ME, fibromyalgia, anxiety and depression. 

 

The Venue

Barmoor (www.barmoor.org.uk) is a private country house beautifully situated on the edge of the North York Moors, just a short drive from the market town of Kirkbymoorside.  The accommodation is simple but lovingly cared for, with facilities including a fully-equipped kitchen, dining room, lounge and sitting room, as well as nine bedrooms, six bathrooms and a large terraced garden.      

The event is fully catered for. We make our own breakfast from food provided and other meals are brought in by a local caterer.  

The house stands alone in an area of stunning natural beauty but limited public transport options. If you have concerns about reaching the venue, please let us know as we are happy to arrange car shares or lifts wherever possible.

 

Your Facilitators

The facilitators for this course are Robert Broughton and Lauri Bower.  

Robert is a professional mindfulness, well-being and emotional intelligence coach, specialising in stress and neurobiology having trained with some of the field leading researchers in the US and the UK.  His background includes 30+ years of personal meditation study and practice.  Robert founded The Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion in 2009 and continues to take the lead in both managing the business and instructing courses. Over the past nine years he has facilitated mindfulness training for over 1,000 delegates in a variety of settings, including schools, universities, charities and the NHS.     

Lauri is also a mindfulness course instructor, as well as our retreat programme lead.  She has  30 years of personal meditation and mindfulness practices and 15 years' experience organising and running retreats.  She joined York MBSR in 2012 and completed a Ph.D. in Mindfulness in 2014. Lauri has facilitated MBSR training for over 300 delegates so far.   


Refund Policy

If you choose to cancel your booking, we will refund:

  • 100% of the course fee, minus a £30 administration fee, if notice is given at least 4 weeks before the course commences. 
  • 50% of the course fee if notice is given at least 7 days before the course commences
  • 25% of the course fee if notice is given less than 7 days before the course commences 
  • No refunds will be issued after the course commences


In the case that the course is cancelled by the organiser, any fees paid will be refunded in full.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will an MBSR course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK. An 8-week MBSR, MBCT course or 10-week MBLC is generally considered a good starting point and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. Please note however that our MBCT courses are restricted to those who suffer personally from depression and as such we don't offer places on our MBCT courses for those seeking professional development. We would recommend instead attending either an MBSR or MBLC course. If you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites with your training provider.
