About this Event

Drawing the Frontline

Our online series of live War Art Talks will take place on Zoom.

Hosted by Company of Makers co-founder Rachel, with special guest, professional Artist, Pete Codling who'll share his insights into this fascinating aspect of art.

Talk 5 of 10: Drawn to Kill

We all know Leonardo. Did you know the word ‘draw’ comes from the Latin and European ‘Dessin’. Which we also call ‘design’, which is to draw. Drawing is way of exploring ideas, drafting concepts, using draughtsmanship to convey an idea. From complex technical engineering drawings of killing machines to exquisite architectural designs for castles and fortress and armoury. Whether a stick in the sand is used to draw a ‘pincer movement’, Leonardo’s quill drawing of a tank, or an engineer using a 3D computer modelling program, we draw. We draw lines. It might be the trajectory of artillery or the tactics of battle, it might the virtual world for war and gaming. It was all drawn in lines first, by someone, like you. It was drawn to kill! Or defend. That is tonight’s theme, so sharpen your pencils!

Let's look at some of these amazing artists and ask...

"How does war affect art and vice versa?"
