In this 5-week introductory course, young creators will dive into the magical world of children's book making! From building a captivating story and designing memorable characters to writing, illustrating, and assembling their very own book — kids will be guided through every step of the creative journey. By the end of the course, children are encouraged to create a 6 to 10-page illustrated storyboard. Perfect for aspiring authors and illustrators ready to bring their imagination to life!


Course Design Overview


Week 1 : Story Building - The foundation of imagination

Introduce the fundamentals of storytelling and help children brainstorm their unique story ideas.

Week 2: Character Creation - Breathing Life into your Story

Help children develop memorable characters that resonate with readers, exploring how characters interact and evolve throughout the story.

Week 3 : World Building - Setting the Scene

Teach children how to create immersive settings that enhance their stories, they will be encouraged to write/illustrate a scene that incorporates their story setting and characters.

Week 4: Illustrate your Story - Bringing Words to Life

Introduce children to the basics of illustration and how it complements storytelling

Week 5: Finalising your Picture Book - From draft to publication

Guide children through the process of editing and publishing, including book formatting and layout. Children finalise their stories and illustrations. A dedicated space showcasing each completed picture book will be available for guests to browse and appreciate the wonderful creations of our young authors !


Tutors Introduction :

Jo Rooks: Jo is a celebrated children's book author and illustrator whose works are loved for their vivid style and heartfelt storytelling. With years of experience, Jo specializes in engaging young minds and sparking creativity through art.

Her books combine enchanting illustrations with meaningful life lessons, perfect for kids and families alike. At this workshop, Jo will share her expertise, inspiration, and secrets to creating captivating art!


Ciara Flood : Ciara is a children's book author, illustrator, and graphic designer with over 20 years of experience in the creative industry. With a degree in Visual Communications from Technological University Dublin, she has worked across design studios, ad agencies, and publishing. Her debut picture book, Those Pesky Rabbits, was published in 2015, and her work has since appeared in books around the world. Ciara teaches illustration at City Lit College and runs creative workshops for all ages across the UK.

1. What is the suitable age range for this workshop?

This workshop is designed for children aged 6 to 12 years old. The activities and materials are tailored for this age group, ensuring younger kids can enjoy the process while older children dive deeper into character creation and storytelling.

2. Will parents or guardians be allowed to stay with their children?

Yes! Parents or guardians are welcome to stay during the workshop if they wish. However, it’s not mandatory. Our experienced workshop team, along with Jo Rooks, will ensure your child feels comfortable, engaged, and supported throughout the event.

3.Do participants need to bring anything?

No, we’ve got everything covered! All materials, including sketchpads, pencils, colors, paints, and collage materials, will be provided. If your child has a favorite set of tools or a specific material they’d like to incorporate, they are welcome to bring it along!

4.Does my child need prior illustration or story-writing experience?

Not at all! This workshop is designed for all skill levels, whether your child loves to doodle or is just starting to explore creativity. Our tutor will guide participants step-by-step through the process, ensuring everyone has fun while learning.

5.What if my child misses a class?

No worries! We understand life gets busy. Catch-up resources or a quick recap will be provided to help your child stay on track.

6. How is this course different from a regular writing or arts class?

This course combines storytelling, art, and hands-on creativity, helping children develop their voice as both writers and illustrators. It's not just writing or arts—it's the full book-making experience!
