Event description
A condensed 5 wk intensive throwing on the Potter's wheel course for beginners learning basic technique as well as making a mug & a plate!

About this event

This fantastic 5 week beginners potter's wheel course is a a beast of a course running on Saturdays 1.30-5.30pm for 4 consecutive weeks followed by a 3 hour glaze session. It teaches you the technique of throwing and how to glaze. This is one of the best groundings you will get in a beginners throwing course.

In a small group of 6 students with 2 tutors you will get a lot of one on one tuition throughout the day.

It covers learning to centre, throwing bowls and cylinders, turning bases, pulling and attaching handles as well as throwing a basic plate on the wheel. After your work has been fired you come back and glaze it all. After this you will be up to the standard required to take on membership or sign up for the Improvers should you wish to.

All your materials and firings are included in the cost. We supply all equipment and aprons. All you need to do is turn up!

Please note that this course is very intensive and may not be suitable for everyone. It requires physical strength and stamina. If you have any doubts as to whether it is right for you please get in touch before booking.

Cost: £350 inclusive of all materials and firings.

Dates: September 18th, 25th, October 2nd, 9th 1.30-5.30pm + 3 hour glazing session on Saturday 23rd October 10am-1pm once all your work has been fired.

Covid-19: Please note that we have implemented new work practices to keep everyone safe. When you arrive, you will have to queue outside. You will be allowed in one at a time and given time to take your seat. You will be issued with a mask (you can bring your own if you'd rather), a clean apron and towel as well as some latex gloves if you would prefer to use them. You will have to sanitise your hands. The teachers will be wearing face shields. We are not able to socially distance so we have installed cough screens in between each wheel. There will be one to one contact with the teachers through your hands as that is how pottery is taught. The teachers will sanitise their hands before making contact. At the end of the class you will leave one by one as you came in. If we have to reschedule due to a Lockdown we will let you know the new dates as quickly as possible.

PREGNANCY: Please note that this course is not suitable for pregnant women as there are health implications.

The course structure is as follows:

Week 1: Centring and making basic pots: Centring is the most difficult thing to master when learning to throw on the wheel. It is what keeps a pot symmetrical. But everyone learns at different rates and the important thing to realise is that you will learn to do it. The first session is really just learning the technique. Working on pressures, speed and drawing up the clay.

Week 2: Centring and making bowls and cylinders: During this session you will continue with mastering your centring and getting more control of the shapes you are making. We will look at rounded bowls, open bowls and cylinders .

Week 3: Throwing practice and turning bases. For most of this class you will be free to explore any shape you want to make. The last hour will be taken up with learning how to turn bases.

Week 4: Pulling handles, turning bases and throwing a basic plate on a batt. During this session you will learn to pull and attach handles to the cylinders you threw in the previous weeks as well as turn any bases left to do.

Week 5: Glaze all work.

After you have finished the course you will be up to membership standard should you wish to join or you can continue to learn via an improvers course.

REFUNDS: *Please note that if you cancel 10 full working days in advance then you will get a full refund. After this period and before the course starts you will only get a 50% refund if someone else can be found to replace you.
