Dr Barbara Blacklaws’ research focuses on immune responses to, and the pathogenesis of, persistent virus infections. She will be introducing the speakers, chairing the discussion and representing Newnham College at this event.

We are delighted to announce that Dr Ricarda Beckmann will talk on “Inside black holes: why the Universe would not look the same without them" which connects to her current research which focuses on the link between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies across cosmic time. As a numerical astrophysicist, she uses large-scale simulations of the Universe to understand how supermassive black holes evolve and what role they play in the evolution of the universe we see around us today. Her interests cover a wide variety of cosmological environments, from the origin of the first supermassive black holes via black holes in dwarf galaxies to black holes in the most massive galaxy clusters we see today.

Current MCR President and Archeology PhD student, Aman Kang (NC 2021) will talk on "The Need to Test and Optimise Non-Destructive Sampling Methods in Archaeological Research". In the case of Palaeolithic bone tools, we know little about how humans engaged with their environment to produce tools made from bone. The aim of this talk is to address these investigative limitations, and to explore how Aman's research has optimised non-destructive sampling methods to understand the species from which Palaeolithic bone tools were made.

We also are pleased to have Katherine Gregory (NC 2020) performing a short piece for us. Katherine is a current student of Newnham College, and is in her final year studying Theology, Religion and Philosophy of Religion. She is also a choral scholar in Trinity College Chapel Choir, and was previously Head Chorister of Truro Cathedral Choir.
