Research and teaching activities both involve the creation and use of intellectual property (IP). In some cases, IP created by SHU staff and/or students has commercial value and protecting it properly can greatly increase its potential to achieve impact and a financial return (to both institution and inventors). On the other hand, if you need to use IP that doesn’t belong to you, it is important to know what you can and cannot do with it without infringing the owner’s rights.

Hosted by Danielle Miles (I2RI Innovation Manager), Jim Walsh and Madhuri Raju (IP and Commercialisation Managers, Research and Innovation Services) welcome I2RI staff to join them to in an interactive session that will begin with a brief presentation, followed by Q&A. The subject matter that will be covered in the presentation includes:

• A basic introduction to IP and the main types of it

• Things that are protected by IP rights

• Ownership of and rights to use IP created by SHU staff

• Ownership of and rights to use IP created by SHU students

• Use of IP created by people other than SHU staff or students

• Commercial exploitation of IP

Spaces are limited so registration is essential. Upon registration you have the opportunity to submit questions in advance that you may want addressing by Jim and Madhuri in the session.

Bio: Dr Jim Walsh, IP and Commercialisation Manager, Research and Innovation Services

After gaining more than fifteen years of experience in research in academia and industry, including leadership roles in commercial R&D (Axordia, Intercytex, Pfizer) and in technology-based service delivery (Forensic Science Service), Jim moved on to specialise in the protection and exploitation of IP assets.

Before joining Sheffield Hallam University in 2017, Jim served for six years as the University of York’s Business Development Manager for biosciences- a role that included membership of decision-making bodies and steering groups for internal funding initiatives, major innovation projects and commercial services, as well as directorships of a number of early stage companies.

Jim has a degree in Anatomy and Cell Biology and a PhD in molecular and cell biology, both from University of Sheffield.

Bio: Madhuri Raju, IP and Commercialisation Manager, Research and Innovation Services

Madhuri’s career began with six years in biosciences research, initially at the Henry Wellcome Laboratories for Integrative Neuroscience and Endocrinology (University of Bristol), moving on to the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research.

Having served as an IP consultant to the Cos4Cloud European Horizon 2020 project, a trade mark attorney at Brand Protect and as an IP Assistant at Sulman and Associates IP Law, Madhuri possesses a wide range of IP and business experience.

Madhuri has a degree in Chemistry, Microbiology and Zoology, and postgraduate qualifications in Medical Molecular Genetics and in
