For the April Bookworms meeting, Annie Gentil-Kraatz will introduce the work of the Belgian photographer Bieke Depoorter (1986-). Depoorter became a full member of Magnum in 2016. She has published several books and in 2020 started her own publishing platform ‘Des Palais’. This talk is very timely as Depoorter is one of four shortlisted for 2023 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. The exhibition has just opened at The Photographers Gallery in London. Accidental encounters are the starting point for many of her projects, including the ongoing project, Michael, on display at the TPG. In this she investigates the life of a man she met on the streets of Portland in 2015. After giving her three suitcases full of scrapbooks and other material, he disappeared. As a photographer she is continually questioning the medium. In her work, As It May Be, she encouraged people to write their comments directly on the photographs. This promises to be a stimulating evening discussing the work of a photographer who is not yet widely known in the UK.

All Welcome but pre-registration is necessary. Groups are deliberately kept small to enable good conversation and exchange of ideas.
