Description

When we defend and repeat the destructive actions of our parents or caretakers, or communities, we become part of a larger, intergenerational problem that perpetuates a cycle of abuse. So what can we do to stop it? This conference highlights the recurring nature of the cycles of violence across generations and the evidence-based interventions needed to break the cycle of violence.

This conference is a unique forum for Practitioners, advocates, Faith Communities, survivors, front-line workers, and professionals across all disciplines and philosophies to gather for in-depth exchange of current information on all facets of violence, abuse and trauma prevention and intervention; and to share information, discuss controversial issues, and engage in difficult dialogues.

CONFERENCE TRACKS INCLUDE

1.Youth at Risk – including campus assault, mental health, technology safety

2.Survivors – Adult survivors of maltreatment/trauma, child maltreatment/adverse childhood experiences, intimate partner violence(victims. Survivors, offenders), sexual victimisation, trauma in general

3.Legal /Criminal Justice Issues & Prevention – human trafficking/modern slavery, coercion/control legislation

4.Faith/Cultural Response to Violence

5. Female Genital Mutilation

MORNING SESSION

Cultural and Spiritual Competence

Purpose

The purpose of this session is to introduce cultural and spiritual competence as key capabilities for victim service providers. The session provides definitions of cultural and spiritual competence, explores cultural considerations in victim service delivery and barriers to culturally and spiritually competent service delivery, and examines strategies to address barriers to culturally and spiritually competent service delivery.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

Define cultural and spiritual competence.

Recognize the multidimensional nature of culture.

Explain the importance of cultural considerations in providing victim services.

Describe common barriers to providing culturally and spiritually competent services.

Identify specific skills, strategies, and resources required to serve diverse crime victims effectively.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Developing Resilience

Purpose

This session emphasizes a strength-based action approach to inform victim assistance providers and managers about resilience and to provide strategies to develop and strengthen resilience. There is a growing body of research that suggests that the negative impact of stressful situations is reduced through the use of adaptive coping responses. This session details five core elements of resilience and proposes specific traits and strategies within each element to decrease stress among victim assistance providers and to increase quality services to victims of crime.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Identify negative and positive effects of doing trauma-related work.

Describe the five core elements of resilience.

Develop personal strategies to strengthen their resilience.

Pre-session Assignment

Participants will be required to complete the Compassion Satisfaction/Fatigue Self-Test for Helpers and answer the questions following the self-test. This will be sent out two weeks before the training.
