Would you like to know more about taking our members onto the hills or even on simple low-level walks? Might you be interested in getting a hill walking permit in the future but not sure where to start? Join us for a wander around the beautiful Peak District where you can enjoy a day out and learn some navigation skills.

We will be walking at a chilled, easy pace with plenty of breaks. From the start we will be looking at our maps in a lot of detail and talking about how to do some trickier navigation. No previous experience is needed. We will aim to finish by about 3 or 4pm, depending on the weather and walking times.

There is no mobile phone signal at the start point so please ask any questions in advance and try to be on time as you won’t be able to let us know if you are running late.
Each of you have filled in the information on Eventbrite with health information and emergency contact details. Please get in touch if you need to change any of this.
We have some spare kit so please ask if you need anything
The course will be run by Pat, a qualified Mountain Leader and a member of the Cheshire Scouts Mountain Team.
There are no silly questions so please speak up
This is not a fitness test – we are out to chill and take time to learn a little
If the weather is bad, we will go anyway so please come prepared and don’t worry about a bit of rain … we are scouts!

Kit

Please try and bring the kit below. Get in touch if you might need to borrow any kit. We will be walking whatever the weather so please come prepared.

Compass – with a magnifying glass on it, something like a Silva Ranger or Type 4
Map – the local OS Explorer 1:25,000 map, OL24, or a printed map covering the Shining Tor and Errwood area, either buy the waterproof version or stick it in a map case
Rucksack – you may want to take your jacket off so please make sure that the rucksack is big enough
Boots – strong, waterproof boots with firm soles and ankle support
Walking socks – Proper hiking socks make a difference to protect your feet
Waterproof jacket – A full and proper waterproof jacket designed for all-day out in the rain
Waterproof Trousers – A compact pair should be fine
Good walking clothes – Mixed lightweight layers but no cotton, no jeans
Extra layer – You need to have extra layers in case the weather goes bad or for rest stops
Hat – Warm hat or sun hat depending on the weather.
Gloves – it can be much colder on the top than down below
Water – Plenty to drink
Packed lunch and snacks
A camera – lets be optimistic
