Event description
The Sun Hotel and Bar hosts free gin tasting masterclasses during this year's Gin Fest with special guests from Goosnargh Gin Distillery.

About this Event

We're delighted to have the distillers from Goosnargh coming in to see us at this year's Gin Fest. Their fantastic new gin will be sampled at all of the three tastings at The Sun throughout the evening of Thursday 22nd August.

Goosnargh Gin - hailing from the foot of Beacon Fell, near the edge of the Forest of Bowland, Lancashire - is lovingly made by Richard and Rachel Trenchard.

Their gins are developed and distilled in small batches, using traditional copper alembic stills. Recipe blends are developed using Constance, their baby still. Once the blend of botanicals are absolutely right, one of their larger stills (either Beatrice or Felicity) works its distilling magic on the handcrafted gin, ready for bottling and hand labelling. All bottles are hand-finished, with handwritten details, e.g. batch and bottle number.

Each gin is a Chapter of the Goosnargh Gin story. Chapters One and Two are available throughout the year, while Chapters Three and Four are seasonal releases:

Chapter One – Signature Gin is a herby, verdant gin designed to reflect the surrounding fells and meadows where it is distilled (right at the base of Beacon Fell). It contains a blend of 14 organic botanicals including meadowsweet, yarrow, chamomile and elderflower, all of which can be found growing naturally within the Forest of Bowland AONB. This gin recently received an IWSC Gold Award 2019, with 95 out of a possible 100 scored.

Chapter Two – Dark Skies is a very delicately spiced, comforting gin, created as a nod to the Forest of Bowland AONB’s status as a dark skies area for its astronomical significance, Beacon Fell being one of the designated sites. This chapter contains botanicals such as aniseed, root ginger, cardamom and vanilla and spiced gin to be enjoyed all year round.

Chapters Three and Four are seasonal releases. Because they always use fresh botanicals, when all of these gins are sold, you won't be able to get your hands on them until the following summer growing season.

Chapter Three – Floral Notes is inspired by the garden at Goosnargh Gin, at the base of Beacon Fell and captures notes of Richard and Rachel's fond floral favourites – rose, hibiscus and peony. In keeping with their traditional methods of distillation, Duchese de Nemours peonies, a mid-19th century variety, have been chosen for their fine fragrance and unique flavour.

Chapter Four – Hay Time is a result of a collaboration between Richard and Rachel, the Forest of Bowland AONB team and Peter Blackwell, who farms in Slaidburn. The internationally recognised meadows have been cared for by Peter's family for three generations. They took cuts of botnaicals from the meadow and created a gin which harnesses its rich diversity, including botanicals such as sweet vernal grass, red clover flowers and common sorrel. A donation from each bottle sold will support educational projects in the AONB, promoting the preservation and restoration of meadows.

Richard and Rachel look forward to meeting you at The Sun Hotel and Bar masterclasses to share their story (and delicious gin) so far.
