About this Event

Drawing the Frontline

Our online series of live War Art Talks will take place on Zoom.

Hosted by Company of Makers co-founder Rachel, with special guest, professional Artist, Pete Codling who'll share his insights into this fascinating aspect of art.

Talk 8 of 10: Drawn to Together

Inevitably the majority of war art has more than one character in it. It is different than the solo portrait, the solitary figure, a person with a name. Most battle scenes have a compositional design around the hero narrative. Battle scenes, documentary panoramic of the battle and its players, illustrated so a viewer can be told the story, of who won. Its not the artist’s fault, it is the tradition of patronage and commissioning the artist to do, what they are told. Ordered, like soldiers to. However increasingly with contemporary art we are asked to look at the more personal and human story of all involved, everyone is affected by war. We try to tell a story, express a feeling, that the photograph or the film footage, still can not do. Lets look at some famous artists who got involved in the war effort. The propaganda art, and the passive warriors.

Let's look at some of these amazing artists and ask...

"How does war affect art and vice versa?"

These are 'live talks'!
