Introduction to Intaglio Printmaking
8-Week Course | Led by Jemma Gunning at Centrespace Studio
All materials provided | Open to all abilities
Join artist and printmaker Jemma Gunning for a hands-on 8-week journey into the world of intaglio printmaking. This course offers an exciting opportunity to explore a range of techniques including collagraph, carborundum, drypoint, and monotype. Working with both traditional and experimental materials, you’ll learn how to create richly layered prints using an etching press. Whether you're new to print or looking to expand your skills, this course encourages creativity, curiosity, and playful experimentation.
Weeks 1–2: CollagraphStart by exploring collagraph – a highly tactile and versatile form of printmaking. Create your own plates using card, glue, and found textures to build layered surfaces. You’ll learn how to seal, ink, and print these plates to produce richly embossed, tonal images. This is a fantastic introduction to working with texture and experimenting with materials.
Weeks 3–4: CarborundumDelve into carborundum printing, a painterly intaglio process that produces rich velvety blacks and subtle tonal variation. Using gritty carborundum paste, you'll paint directly onto plates, experimenting with brush marks, stencils, and layered imagery. This technique allows for expressive, bold outcomes and is perfect for gestural mark-making.
Weeks 5–6: DrypointFocus on line and detail through the drypoint process. Scratch and etch directly into a variety of substrates including plastic and tetrapak to create your plates. You’ll explore inking and wiping techniques to bring out delicate burrs and textures, producing distinctive and expressive prints full of character.
Weeks 7–8: Monotype & Hybrid PrintingIn the final two sessions, you’ll bring everything together through monotype and hybrid printing. Experiment with layering techniques, chine-collé, ghost prints, and combining intaglio methods to create dynamic, mixed-media prints. These sessions offer space to play, reflect, and develop your personal voice using the skills you've gained. Please note there is no session on the 28th October as it is half term.Full course dates:
