What is mindfulness?

At is most basic, mindfulness can be described simply as ‘attention’ or ‘awareness’. But it is more than that. More accurately, mindfulness is purposeful awareness of the present moment exactly as it is, without judgement and without wanting to change, avoid or cling to whatever the present experience is. Mindfulness might include moment by moment awareness of our thoughts, bodily sensations, emotions, reactions, behaviour and physical/social world.

Taken from Buddhist tradition, various meditation practices can be used to increase mindfulness and develop the following mindful attitudes: non judging, non-striving, acceptance, patience, trust, openness, curiosity, letting things go, gentleness, non-reactivity, loving kindness and forgiveness.

What mindfulness is not...

  • A technique- Mindfulness is not a technique, it is a way of being. Of being embodied in the present moment. Not in your head thinking about past regrets or future worries. Not wishing things were different. Not clinging to things when they change. But being in the presesnt moment, exactly as it is.
  • A religion- Mindfulness has its origins in Buddhism and indeed meditation practice is a key component of the dharma (the Buddhist teaching). However, meditation is just one component of Buddhism and the Dharma includes teachings far wider than meditation alone. Western teachings of mindfulness take a different emphasis to those within the dharma.
  • Relaxation- Many people experience relaxation as a result of mindfulness meditation, however this is not the goal. The goal of mindfulness is to develop awareness and acceptance of our experiences, whatever they may be. There may be times when our minds wander, race even, and we are unable to focus for more than a few seconds at a time. Or maybe we feel pain, anger, sadness, anxiety, boredom, or whatever other unpleasant sensations that exist in life. These are all valuable and valid experiences. The aim of mindfulness is not to replace these unpleasant feelings with relaxation, but to change our relationship to these unpleasant feelings so that we don't add unnecessary suffering to these unpleasant experiences through our own reactions.
  • Agreeing with or allowing bad things

Who benefits from mindfulness?

Anyone who wants to become more engaged and connected to their life, form deeper and more fulfilling connections with others, feel more satisfied and less caught up in negative thoughts or feelings, and make better life choices or decisions can benefit from mindfulness.

With regular practice and over time, mindfulness and meditation can offer the following benefits:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Improved sleeping patterns
  • Increased relaxation
  • Greater self-awareness and emotional intelligence
  • Deeper levels of self-acceptance and self-love

How do I become more mindful?

Mindfulness is best developed through formal mindfulness practice and discussions about mindful values. This 8-week course incorporates elements of MBSR and MBCT- two of the most widely researched programmes shown to increase mindfulness. Each week includes different practices, exercises and discussions which build on the previous week's to deepen the learning and understanding of what mindfulness is and foster mindful attitudes. It is also an opportunity to build a regular practice over a series of weeks. This kind of repetition over time enables new patterns of thinking and mindful habits to develop. Learning to mediate in a group with others will provide you with a good source of insight and support and groups are limited to 12 so that group members have more opportunity to be involved in group discussions if they wish and can benefit from more individual attention.

There are two options from which you can choose:

8-week course- £225 (reduce to 190) 8-week course with additional silent retreat- £275 (reduced to (235)

The silent meditation retreat is an excellent way to deepen your mediation practice, learning from the ancient practice of ‘noble silence’ and developing further sustained attention through extended mindfulness practice.

Please note. The silent retreat date is to be confirmed and will be open to others to join. Unlike the 8-week course and 1-day workshops the retreat is open to a larger group size of maximum 20.

What is included in the course?

  • 8 classes- every Thursday 19.30-21.00
  • High quality course materials- You will receive a professionally printed work booklet to guide you through the course
  • Beautiful and comfortable rooms to learn in and an excellent central location just off Hyde Park meaning you have plenty of opportunity to practice mindful walking before or after the course starts and make the most of the peace and calm
  • Audio meditations will also be provided so that you can practice at home. These will be available as an MP3 download or CD depending on your preference
  • You will receive a 20 minute telephone conversation within the first week of starting the course to help you to focus on what you would like to get out of the course
  • The option to attend an additional 1-day silent retreat following completion of the course, with a different pricing structure depending on your preference

Who can attend the course?

Anyone can attend the course however it is best suited to people who are beginners to mindfulness with little prior experience

What shall I bring?
