Event description
Launching the start of Elephant West's surrealist season is the opening night of Eleanor Macnairs "Surrealist in Play-Doh" project.

About this Event

Join us at 6pm, Friday 22nd November to celebrate the opening of Eleanor Macnair’s “Surrealists rendered in Play-Doh” photograph project.

Macnair’s project is inspired by self-portraits taken in photomaton’s, or photo booths, first established in Paris at Luna Park in the 1920’s. André Breton, the “father of the Surrealism”, and his circle were among its most enraptured users. These black-and-white photo booth portraits have survived to the present day.

Eleanor Macnair has rendered nine of these early twentieth-century selfies in her own disposable material of choice: Play-Doh.

On show are reimagined, large-scale Technicolor portraits of André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Suzanne Muzard, Paul Eluard, Louis Aragon, Yves Tanguy, Jacques André Boiffard and Marie-Berthe Aurenche. The walls of Elephant West will be alive with gigantic eyes, collaged together from Macnair’s earlier series of work. The collages have been created specifically for our Surrealism season, playing on the motif of the eye in Surrealism.

We’ve even recreated our very own “working” photo booth in its original 1920’s form – open for all to view and use on the night.
