Frequently asked questions
The Sudan Studies Research Conference is an annual academic event dedicated to advancing research on Sudan and South Sudan (both ancient & modern). It is a platform for archaeologists and interdisciplinary scholars to present and discuss their work. The 2025 event marks the 8th edition of the series
The 8th Sudan Studies Research Conference will take place online on Saturday, 13 September 2025 between 09:00 - 18:00 (BST) as a series of talks and presentations.
While we typically host our conferences in-person or in a hybrid format, the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Sudan has led us to move the 2025 event fully online. This enables broader access specially to those based in the region and early career researchers around the world.
This year’s event is hosted in collaboration with the Founders of the Durham University Sudan & Egyptology Study Group (DUSESG), PANAF BOOKS and ARU. The conference is organised by a team of academic volunteers, primarily archaeologists. Dr. Samantha Tipper is the Conference Director.
We have postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and scholars from a variety of disciplines with a focus on Sudan. We actively encourage interdisciplinary work that explores Sudan from archaeological, historical, anthropological, linguistic, political, or contemporary perspectives.
We aim to keep the event accessible and affordable to support wider participation. All of the organisers are currently unpaid. The fee is to cover the technical and administrative costs to ensure that in the future we will be able to grow the scope of the conference.
Since 2017, we've partnered with institutions like the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Warsaw. We are a key platform for early career researchers working on Sudan focused topics.
We will email all registered attendees by Friday 12 September 2025 with further login information. Any tickets purchased after that may experience a delay in receiving their login information so you are strongly advised to book your ticket early to avoid any disappointment.
Yes, we are planning on making the Summer Series available asynchronously to increase accessibility. That means you will be able to login (at a time that suits you) after the event. We will share more details in due course.
