An Introduction to Pottery covering the basics of throwing and handbuilding

About this event

This complete beginners Introduction to Pottery course gives you a grounding in both throwing on the potter's wheel and the main handbuilding techniques along with a workshop in how to glaze. It is for adults 18 and over only.

There will be 4 weeks on the wheel learning the basics of throwing, centring, turning bases and pulling and attaching handles. You will also be looking at several handbuilding techniques such as pinching pots, coiling and building with slabs over another 4 weeks. All your work is fired over two weeks after which, you can come along to glaze everything you have made. The tutors guide you through every step of the process encouraging and suggesting ways of improving your work.

There are 10 people on this course and three teachers so you get a lot of one to one tuition. At the start of the course you get split into two groups of five, one group working upstairs on the wheel and the other working downstairs on handbuilding. At week 5 you swap over.

All your materials and firings are included in the cost. There are no hidden extra charges. We supply all equipment and aprons.

Cost: £325 inclusive of all materials and firings.

Dates: September 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th 7-9pm + glazing session on Saturday November 12th, 19th, or 26th 10am-12pm. If you are unable to make the Saturday glazing please let us know when you book and we will arrange another glazing date for you. Please note that dates for glaze classes are just a guide and subject to change.

Covid-19: Please note that we have implemented new work practices to keep everyone safe. When you arrive, you will have to queue outside. You will be allowed in one at a time and given time to take your seat. Please bring a mask with you. A clean apron and towel as well as some latex gloves will be provided if you would prefer to use them. You will have to sanitise your hands. The teachers will be wearing masks. We are not able to socially distance so we have installed cough screens in between each wheel. There will be one to one contact with the teachers through your hands as that is how pottery is taught. The teachers will sanitise their hands before making contact. At the end of the class you will leave one by one as you came in.

Please note that you are required to wear a mask in the studio. If you are exempt please get in touch with us before the course starts. If you have been abroad 14 days before any of the classes you may have to miss the class or take a PCR test.

Pregnancy: This course is not suitable for pregnant women.
