TBA: The Informals II: Performance at Brighton Festival

Brighton Festival has sadly been cancelled due to Covid-19. We are currently working on ways to adapt the exhibition and performance to present it in a digital form. More information on this will be announced as soon as possible.

We have not taken this decision lightly, but believe it to be the best for the sake of the community to make proactive changes while we have the chance to reduce health risks to artists, guests and everyone connected to the event.

We are still very excited to share with you what we have planned, and would like to emphasise that this is not a cancellation, but a change of format.

Artists Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kühne present an interactive exhibition and a one-off performance exploring music subcultures of Brighton, zeroing in on non-conformity and defiance of standard lifestyles in our digital age.

A live, improvised audio-visual performance. The artists collaborate with local musicians Phonetic, Bobbie Johnson, Ollie Hutchison and Marshall Mandiangu to create a collective portrait of, and a give a platform to, Brighton’s extraordinary youth culture.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Andreas Kühne

Andreas Kühne (1988, the Netherlands) is an improviser, sound artist, and drummer. His art practice involves creating audiovisual works and field improvisations by revealing the musical qualities of on-site inert objects with live electronic setups for real-time generation and manipulation.

He is a Master of Music graduate from the ArtEZ University of Arts, and the founder and curator of the interdisciplinary concert series RAMSES/ MPRO in Amsterdam.

Recent performances include; A4 cultural space, Bratislava; Lofoten International Art Festival, Solvaer; Sonic Acts Festival, Amsterdam; Inversia Festival, Murmansk; Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam; Overkill Festival, Enschede; State of Fashion Exhibition, Arnhem; Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Amsterdam.

Polina Medvedeva

Polina Medvedeva is a Russian-Dutch (documentary) filmmaker and artist based in Amsterdam. Her work researches the notion of informality, focusing on informal economies and non-conformist communal structures, their principles influencing the aesthetics of her videos.

Medvedeva’s works have been exhibited at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels; Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art, Jerusalem; Rotterdam City Theatre; Art Brussels; Centre of Fine Arts Groningen; De Nieuwe Vide gallery, Haarlem and screened during IDFA Docs for Sale and on VPRO among others.

Phonetic

Phonetic is an artist who is already synonymous with Brighton’s thriving hip hop scene, thanks to her skills on the mic, combined with her unwavering creative drive. That drive and talent go way beyond her 21 years and they are good signifiers as to why she has already earned support slots for a number of notable artists and acts, including Rag’N’Bone Man, Children of Zeus, Skinnyman, LEVELZ, Dr Syntax and Amy True.

Phonetic continues to build her career with more live shows and collaborations, as well as her very first solo project – The Dictionary of Proverbs LP – which promises to launch into the UK scene and beyond.

M Kudo

Hailing from West-London, 22 year old Marshall Mandiangu (aka M Kudo) is a singer-songwriter, dancer, music producer and energetic live performer. Inspired by legends such as Michael Jackson & James Brown; M Kudo effortlessly meanders through an eclectic blend of R&B/soul, pop, rock, hip hop, world, gospel and funk. Never afraid of getting personal, M Kudo will sing about everything from the universe, break-ups, and of course letting his hair down and having a dance.

Following the success of his former rap career under his former alias “CM17 Sho Sho” and graduating from BIMM Brighton; he hooked up with Gi3MO of Rum Committee after the pair met at AudioActive and this marked the beginning of an extremely prolific studio-run. At the end of the decade; M Kudo was presented with the “Simon D’Souza Music Award” by AudioActive, an accolade achieved for his enthusiasm and energy towards music.

Bobbie Johnson

Bobbie Johnson is a Rapper/Producer coming out of the sunny seaside city Brighton (UK). Conscious thought and social commentary showcased on her latest EPs ‘You & I’and ‘The Defier EP’. Over the past few years, she has been supporting the likes of Rag N Bone Man, Roots Manuva, The Pharcyde + many many more and played festival stages around the UK and Europe, she has gained the nickname of the ‘Rapping Adele’ increasing her fan base with every show she commands, promoting the new age voice of hip hop.

The Informals II is a new commission by Lighthouse and Brighton Festival, with support from Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, and Mondrian Fund. The Informals was originally commissioned by Sonic Acts and Inverse Festival, Murmansk.
