About this event:
This session will explore Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), or the principles and practices that ensure innovative research contributes positively to society, fosters ethical considerations, and aligns with societal values.

As described by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), “ Responsible research and innovation is a process that seeks to promote creativity and opportunities for science and innovation that are socially desirable and undertaken in the public interest. Responsible research and innovation acknowledges that innovation can raise questions and dilemmas, is often ambiguous in terms of purposes and motivations and unpredictable in terms of impacts, beneficial or otherwise. Responsible research and innovation creates spaces and processes to explore these aspects of innovation in an open, inclusive and timely way.”

During this event, attendees will gain valuable insights and tools to enhance their understanding of RRI and improve their practice. This is the third of four training webinars UKRIO is hosting on topics related to research integrity for subscriber institutions across the 2024-25 academic year.

Who is the event for: Staff and research students at UKRIO subscriber organisations (no limit on number of attendees per organisation).

The session is particularly relevant for:

• Researchers needing introductory or refresher training on RRI

• Research students, of any level of experience

• Supervisors, principal investigators, managers, trainers and others who need to pass on
key lessons on RRI to colleagues

• Professional services staff, administrators and others who need awareness of RRI as
part of their job roles

Learning outcomes:
Attendees will receive an engaging introduction to RRI drawn from Catalyst Editorial and UKRIO’s extensive practical experience.

Following this session, attendees will have an improved understanding of:

• What RRI is, its place in the research and innovation landscape, and how it connects to
and supports other existing research frameworks, as well as global sustainable
development goals

• How the RRI process enables researchers to consider, plan and refine research projects
and plans through anticipation, reflection and stakeholder engagement

• The opportunities and challenges RRI raises for researchers and for professional
services staff

• How RRI can support inclusion and strengthen trust in innovative research.

• How to meet the RRI-related requirements and expectations of research funders

• The available tools and resources on RRI.

Dr Jane Alfred is a responsible research practice and research integrity consultant, professional editor, and the Director of Catalyst Editorial Ltd. Through her work across the research sector, including as a member of the UK Committee on Research Integrity, Jane supports responsible research practices and responsible research reporting to ensure confidence and trust in how research is conducted and reported. Jane advocates for more inclusive research environments that recognise, evaluate and reward contributions fairly, assure the integrity of research, and support responsible research leadership.
