Description

The Shrewsbury Civic Society is excited to announce a five-part Study Group on the History of Shrewsbury from pre-Roman settlement to the conclusion of The Anarchy in 1154, that decided the succession of the Crown of England. Each two-hour Study Group is designed for either the historian, educator, student or general public interested in the history of Shrewsbury and Shropshire during this formative time period. Tea and cake will be served at the break and time will be allotted for questions at the end of each presentation. There will be free hand outs on the subject matter of each presentation.


The following is a brief description of each of the two-hour study groups presented by Russell Game BA HONS, Retired Head of Dept in History and Politics , William Brookes School, Much Wenlock, Shropshire: Assisted by Bibbs Cameron Ex Tour Guide: British Museum, Guide: Sacred Site Tours.


Study Group 1: Early settlement
Date: Wednesday, 19
thFebruary, 2020 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm


This presentation will address the following questions: Is there any evidence for pre-Roman settlement in Shrewsbury? Why didn’t the Romans settle in Shrewsbury? Is Meole Brace the oldest part of Shrewsbury? Was Shrewsbury controlled by King Arthur? When did Shrewsbury become a regional centre? What was Anglo-Saxon Shrewsbury like?


Study Group 2: The Normans

Date: Wednesday, 18thMarch, 2020 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm


In this presentation, we’ll answer the following questions: Who were the Normans?

Why did the Normans build castles?What were motte and bailey castles?How did the building of the castle affect Shrewsbury?Why did the Normans place so much emphasis on religion?How and why was the abbey developed at Shrewsbury?


Study Group 3: The Development of Shrewsbury

Date: Wednesday, 15thApril, 2020 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm


This presentation covers the development of Shrewsbury, providing interesting facts about the following questions: What does Domesday tell us about Shrewsbury? How did the revolt of Robert de Bellême affect the town? What was the feudal system?

How did towns fit into the feudal system?What was a town charter?When did Shrewsbury receive its charter?


Study Group 4: The Anarchy

Date: Wednesday, 20th May, 2020 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm


This presentation will address the following questions: What was the Anarchy? What happened when King Stephen came to Shrewsbury? How accurate are the Cadfael books? How did the Normans deal with lawlessness? How did the Anarchy end?

Study Group 5: Personalities

Date: Wednesday, 17th June, 2020 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm


What was it like to live during this period of history? This presentation will address this and the following questions: Who was Aethelflaed? What was the role of women in Anglo-Saxon and Norman England? Who was Edric the Wild? How common was rebellion during this period? Who was Roger de Montgomery? How did the earldom of Roger de Montgomery affect Shropshire?


The Five-Part Study Group will be held at Bear Steps Hall (SY1 1UJ) on the 3rd Wednesday of the month from February, 2020 to June, 2020. The fee for each presentation is £5.98 per participant this includes the Online registration service fees added to cost of a ticket. When enrolling a discount will apply when you register for all five study groups of £5.. given back on the first night.


Registration deadline for the five-part Study Group and Study Group 1 will be Monday, 17thFebruary, 2020. The registration deadline for Study Group 2 is Monday, 16thMarch, 2020. The registration deadline for Study Group 3 is Monday, 13thApril, 2020. The registration deadline for Study Group 4 is Monday, 18thMay, 2020.
