Description

A Big History of Science and Technology

Our daily life and work is underpinned by vast amounts of scientific research and technological innovation. Currently filled with discussions of innovation and newness, we are told that technology will dramatically transform education and work. History provides an important lens onto how science and technology work: the stories we tell ourselves and others, the historical sources which survive, the conditions for scientific and technological success, the importance of teams and networks, and, perhaps most challenging, understanding how the present acts on the past. Drawing on Dr Weatherburn's extensive research into these questions, this lecture will examine these aspects of science and technology and more.

About Dr Michael Weatherburn

Michael R Weatherburn is Field Leader of Humanities and Social Sciences at Imperial College London, UK, where he teaches history, political economy, and business ethics. He is Honorary Associate Professor at Hong Kong University and a visiting lecturer at King’s College London. He is a former Byrne-Bussey Marconi Fellow at Oxford University. His research focuses on the past, present, and future of work. He also specializes in making academic research useful to non-academic audiences and is History & Policy convenor at the UK Government Office for Science.
