Event description
A Feast of Czech Choral Music with the Huntingdonshire Philharmonic Choir Dvořák’s Mass in D, and music by Eben, Janáček, and Smetana.

About this event

a Bohemian Rhapsody

Mass in D – Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Otčenáš – Leoš Janáček (1854-1928)

Pražské Te Deum – Petr Eben (1929-2007)

Vltava from Má Vlast – Bedřich Smetana (1824-84)

The Huntingdonshire Philharmonic's Spring Concert is a celebration of all things Czech, it is truly a Bohemian Rhapsody.

The major work on the programme is Dvořák's Mass in D, composed in 1887 at the suggestion of his patron Josef Hlávka for the inauguration of the Lužany castle chapel. This performance will be the UK première of the original version for choir, four soloists, organ, cello, and two double basses, recently discovered and published by Dvořák-expert Haig Utidjian.

Another unusual instrumental scoring features in Janáček's 1906 setting of The Lord's Prayer, Otčenáš. Here the choir and organ are joined by a tenor soloist and a virtuoso part for harp. Petr Eben's Pražské Te Deum is a song of thanksgiving for the liberation in 1989 of Czechoslovakia from forty-one years of Communist rule; here the choir and organ are joined by the jubilant sonority of bells. Between these two works we showcase the virtuosity of our guest organist, Andrew Parnell, in Adrian Self's solo organ transcription of Smetana's evocation of the course of the river Moldau, Vltava, written in 1874.

The concert begins at 7:30pm and will finish at 9:30pm and we ask patrons to be aware of current guidance regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.
