About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Butler’s Hangings SSSI is on the West Wycombe Estate, overlooking Slough Bottom, in the heart of the Chilterns. It is an area of steep chalk downland below beech woodland. Unfortunately, part of the walk has a very steep slope and is, therefore, not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

We will walk along the top of the ridge to the SSSI, which we will explore for its summer butterflies. We hope to find Marbled White and, hopefully, Dark Green Fritillary, as well as some of our day-flying moths and other wildlife.

Accessibility & risks: steep and rough ground in places. A walk of about 4 km in total. Please check for ticks after the walk and let the leader know if you have picked up any ticks. (Tick advice)

Meet at the south end of the National Trust car park on the top of West Wycombe Hill. Please note that it is not possible to park on the road directly below Butler’s Hangings.
