Join us on 3 October to celebrate the inclusion of all sport related activities within Moray House School of Education and Sport.

About this Event

On 1 August 2019, Moray House School of Education was officially renamed Moray House School of Education and Sport.

On 3 October we are hosting a free, full day event to celebrate the inclusion of all sport related activities within the title of Moray House, and to mark this significant date in our School’s history. We would be delighted if you could join us.

An outline of the day

10am -12 SportsFest (full list of activities below)

12 – 1pm Time for Lunch – Foodtrucks in the Quad plus Levels (on campus) plus a number of local outlets

1pm – 2pm Official opening and name change ceremony with keynote speakers (G1, Paterson's Land)

2pm – 4pm Research and Teaching Showcase (full details below)

4pm – 5pm Ceilidh and drinks reception (G1, Paterson's Land)

There will also be an ongoing Display throughout the day set up by the DCPE Former students bout PE throughout different decades in PL G1.


Come along to our activities to enjoy some unabashed sports fun 10-12 in St Leonard's Land! All our activities are fully accessible.

SportsFest Old-School Sports Races -10am-11am in St. Leonard’s Land Games Hall

Join the Primary PE team to bring back memories of your sports days – take part in relay races, three-legged races and a plethora of other fun races of yesteryear.

SportsFest Creative Dance Fun - 10am-12pm in St. Leonard’s Land Dance Studio

Our specialist dance team will inspire and (re)kindle your love for dance. Be ready for a fun-packed two hours of music, movement and laughter!

Pickleball - 11am-12pm in St. Leonard’s Land Games Hall

Join us to be introduced to the fastest growing sport in the world. This is a fantastic racket sport that can be enjoyed by all ages. Visit pickleballscotland.org for a sneaky preview.

SportsFest Free Swimming - 10am-12pm in St. Leonard’s Land Swimming Pool

Enjoy the facilities and take a dip in our pool. Come along anytime between 10am-12pm for a free swim. (Please note, numbers are restricted to 30 swimmers in the pool at a time).

SportsFest Yoga - 10-15-10.55am in St. Leonard’s Land Gym 2

Fancy some peaceful, body and mind focus time? Then join us for a wonderfully invigorating yet relaxing yoga session. No mats required.

SportsFest Urban Journeys - 10.00-12.00 in St. Leonard’s Land 3.23 (outdoor activity)

Join our Primary PE Outdoor Learning specialist for an outdoor journey with a difference. Experience the Royal Mile with fresh eyes as you research and share your curiosity with others.

SportsFest Headie Handball - 10am-11am in St. Leonard’s Land Gym 3

Join us for a fun, active team game that can get a little out of ‘hand’!

SportsFest Beach(less) Volleyball - 11am-12pm in St. Leonard’s Land Gym 3

Come along and imagine you are on a sun-kissed beach as you play this fantastic sport.

SportsFest Twitter Orienteering Challenge - 10.15, 10.45 & 11.15 start times: meet in St. Leonard’s Land 3.23 at one of the start times (outdoor activity, bring a phone)

Try Twitt-eering! Take part in our Twitter-based orienteering challenge! How many landmarks can you identify and tweet selfies from? You can be competitive and race each other, or enjoy a relaxing stroll around our local landscape.

SportsFest Capacitar Tai Chi and Wellness Practices - 11am-12 in St Leonard's Land Gym 2

Come and join in a number of simple holistic wellness practices that will help you tap into your own wisdom, strength and resources, including Tai Chi and Pal Dan Gum - ( no special clothing required).

Research and Teaching Showcase

Teaching Drop-In Skill Acquisition: Student research into skilled performers - 2-4pm in Paterson's Land 1.37

Students will present plans for a match analysis project, which they will conduct in collaboration with University teams and their coaches

Research Sharing Drop-In Physical Education Research Forum - 2-4pm in Paterson's Land 1.27

Research posters that year 4 students created to showcase their final year research projects will be presented. Some examples of staff research will also be on display. There will be an opportunity to speak to staff and students about their research.

Research Sharing Drop-In Physical Activity for Health Research Centre - 2-4pm in St Leonard's Land 2.35

Take part in some of our research relating to physical activity for health- everyone can do this- try sit stand desk; listen to a bit of our MOOC, try out some activity devices, chat to our researchers. You can also try table tennis, putting, balance board and jigsaws- all designed to make work life a bit more active.

Teaching Drop-In Sociocultural Perspectives: Social theory in Practice - 2-3pm in St Leonard's Land, 2.14

Live link from a refugee camp. Eilidh McGilp graduated this year from the University of Edinburgh with a first-class honours degree in Physical Education and currently works on a refugee camp in Greece with 500 Syrian and Iraqi residents. Under the umbrella of the ‘Happy Caravan’ charity, Eilidh opened an education centre for teenagers where she uses education, sport and creativity as a source of hope, structure and empowerment to a generation traumatised by violent war, treacherous journeys to ‘safety’, and the complex uncertainties of displacement. Through a live link from Greece, Eilidh will share how sociocultural theory inspired her final year research investigation into ‘alleviating post traumatic struggles of child refugees through physical activity’ and how sociocultural theory continues to inform her day to day work in the refugee camp.

Research Sharing Drop-In Human Performance Science: Physiology - Physiology Lab 2-3pm and 3-4pm

A demonstration of a full maximum test on the treadmill with some blood lactates and breath-by-breath gas analysis. This will be run by our MSc Strength & Conditioning students with a commentary provided.

Research Sharing Drop-In Human Performance Science - 2-4pm in Biomechanics Lab

Demonstrations of Golf Swing Analysis: Professional golfers are constantly trying to find an extra edge, and a number increasingly look to scientific analysis to improve the efficiency of their swing. Amateur golfers know that golf swings come in all shapes and sizes, with players spending hours on the practice range in an attempt to find the perfect one. Come and see the science behind the swing!

Research Sharing Drop-In Edinburgh Critical Studies in Sport - 2-4pm in St Leonard's Land 3.25

What do sport mega-events really tell us?: A legacy, diplomacy and history of the big games.

Research Sharing Drop-In Human Performance Science - 2-4pm in Paterson's Land G1

Welcome Trust-funded project Body Language, tells the story of Scotland’s significant contributions to movement and dance through delving into the archives of Margaret Morris; Scottish Gymnastics and Dunfermline College of Physical Education. As part of this project the exhibition of screen-dance, Movement tours from 26 July until 26 October 2019 at Moray House School of Education and Sport. Join the curators and venture behind the scenes of all dance films most of which were created through research and residency at Margaret Morris Archive in summer 2016 by the featured choreographers, dancers, visual artists, composers and filmmakers.
