Description

A celebration of the extraordinary life of Professor David Walton

25 August 1945 – 12 February 2019

Professor David Walton's family invites friends and colleagues to join in a celebration of his extraordinary life on Friday 24 May 2019 at British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge. Please note that the capacity of the venue is 120.

David spent his working life totally immersed in Antarctic matters. He was with the British Antarctic Survey from 1967 when he joined as a botanist, gradually rising to senior positions in science and administration. His reach extended far beyond national research to the international Antarctic science community, advising other national research programmes and devising much of the conservation policy to be developed at the Antarctic Treaty Meetings. Retirement was never an option and he was still active, particularly internationally, until his untimely death.

A message from the family of David Walton

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent kind messages of support and sympathy. We have been completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of kind words people have shared, and the stories of his mentorship and legacy have given us great comfort.

David was buried - very appropriately in a Burial Woodland in the Walton area of Chesterfield. It was good to remember him as a family man and share our treasured memories of the many special times we spent together. In time, we will plant other native tree species at the burial site and many other features to attract as much wildlife as possible - in keeping with his passion for ecology and conservation.
