Review:

Michal Hogenauer’s debut feature is a film that quite literally begins with a truly alarming scene. Taking its cues from the likes of Roman Polanski and Ulrich Seidl, A CERTAIN KIND OF SILENCE is a cleverly orchestrated film of creeping dread, that never once lets its audience off the hook. Mia (Elisha Krenkova) waltzes into the coolly upmarket home of a wealthy family, apparently ahead of schedule. She is met with a mixture of muted disapproval and showy affection that is just the right side of uneasy. Before long Mia’s dream job will reveal its chilling limits as she begins to realise that this immaculate suburban home is in fact a prison.

Hogenauer makes the most of a co-production status that required the film to be shot on location in Latvia with a predominantly Dutch cast, lending the film a sense of ‘placelessness’ entirely suited to Mia’s own growing sense of social dislocation. As with another recent Czech release I, OLGA HEPNAROVA (2016), Hogenauer’s film is based upon real events, with both films all too deliberately leaving the audience wondering where the truth ends and fiction begins. / Review by Rohan Berry Crickmar
