About this event

This year #BAMEOnline conference has transformed into Uncharitable Festival!

We will be running a series of events in July and in October that explore racism in charity and philanthropy, strategies for resisting systems of oppression and imagine pathways to liberation.

Same vibes, better branding.

Our first week for Uncharitable Festival will focus on how charities do the work of Empire.

Our first event is: A Charitable Empire

Khadijah and Martha will kick off Uncharitable Festival to discuss Imperialism.

We often think that empires are a thing of the past, and don't embed an understanding of imperialism into our anti-racism. Understanding imperialism is central to understanding the history of race, and must be central to our anti-racism efforts.

We also fail to recognise how charity and philanthropy have historically and presently been used as a tool of imperialism. What does my work in a charity have to do with an empire? The answer is everything.

So let's talk about it: What is imperialism? What does it have to do with charities? What could an anti-imperialist, anti-racist approach look like for my work?

We will talk through all this and more on 22nd July 2024, 5pm.

Our event will be hosted on zoom, with captions and recording shared with all ticket holders.

See you there!
