Event description

Description

Kate joined the Childrens Bereavement Centre in December 2015 and previously worked for many years for local hospices and other charities. She has been involved in raising millions and developing medical, holistic and counselling services and is skilled in business development, fundraising and marketing which will contribute to ensuring the future sustainability of the Childrens Bereavement Centre.

At those charities, Kate has seen the devastating affect bereavement and loss can have on children, young people and their families and the difference the right kind of support can make. She is therefore passionate about developing the support that the Childrens Bereavement Centre provides so it is available to everyone who needs it.

Aim:

  • To provide participants with examples of various grief models, examining these from the perspective of children and young people.
  • To explore a childs natural attachment process and the subsequent impacts of loss.
  • To offer insights into a childs understanding of bereavement and loss at each developmental stage, identifying both how children and young people understand loss, and, how grief may manifest cognitively, affectively, emotionally and physically at each age bracket.
  • To review case study examples of clinical work with children and young people who have experienced loss as a result of bereavement or parental separation.
  • To share strategies and resources to support children and families affected by loss.
  • To encourage a degree of self-reflection from participants; considering how ones own experiences of loss may influence ones ability to support others, and knowing how to administer ones own self-care.

Objectives:

By the end of the training the participants will have had an opportunity to:

  • Consider how children and young people are affected by bereavement and loss, drawing on the work of prominent theorists and the experiences of clinicians at the Childrens Bereavement Centre.
  • Gain some knowledge around the development of a childs understanding of death, as well as insight into the potential problems that children and young people may face following loss.
  • Learn some ways in which to offer support to children and families affected by loss.
  • Understand the need for self-care when working with loss.
