Event description

Description

Inspired by the release of the historical film 'Darkest Hour', this tour is a new Churchillian version of Laurence's popular Westminster War Walk, '9 Boffins'. Laurence's tours are intended to appeal to a general audience but as always his focus is on the ingenuity of colourful characters drawn from intelligence and scientific history. Rather than occupying centre stage on this tour a picture of Churchill emerges as a presence or influence in the stories of others.

We start with the dawn of chemical warfare in World War 1 and a chemist who made his name debunking quack medicines. We hear of those who worked for Churchill in various ways, including on secret intelligence, sabotage, or providing scientific insight.

IMPORTANT: Meeting point is the top of the entrance ramp of Tate Britain in Atterbury Street,

Cafe and toilets available inside Tate Britain beside the start.

The walk will last about 2 hours, finishing near Charing Cross or Westminster tube. It's January and it can be cold walking around outside for 2 hours so you will maximise your enjoyment by dressing appropriately.
