A riposte to the familiar phrase used to excuse the often reprehensible behaviour of boys and men – ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ – writer-director Shuchi Talati’s first fiction feature is informed by her own experience at an Indian boarding school.16 year-old Mira is the first girl to be appointed as Head Prefect for her academic prowess and leadership skills. But soon she meets a new male student, 17 year-old Sri, who is tall, handsome and ‘worldly-wise’. She must also deal with her mother who rents a house close to the school and the strict Head Teacher Ms Bansal.
This beautifully made and intelligent drama details Mira’s struggle to become the woman she wants to be.
We will study the film in terms of how it challenges and potentially subverts our expectations of a ‘coming of age’ story through comparisons with a range of similar films from different cultures.
