A Conversation: Safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ people
Overview
Hello 🌈
In July, Active Gloucestershire hosted two Safe Space Conversations to explore how we can work together to create safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces for trans and non-binary people to be active in Gloucestershire.
The response was fantastic. Nearly 50 people attended, including local residents and individuals representing community organisations, sports clubs, leisure providers, universities, health partners, youth groups and local authorities.
The discussions were open, caring and action-focused. Together, we identified practical ways to make spaces safer and more inclusive, and there was a clear shared desire to keep the conversation going, and to focus on everyday movement, not elite sport, so that everyone can enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of being active.
So, we’re now bringing the group back together (and welcoming new people too!) for the next Safe Space Conversation, which will take place at Proud, Gloucester’s brand new LGBTQ+ community venue in Kings Square.
We’d love to see you there; to make it easier for people to attend, we’re again offering two options:
- Monday 10th November, 6:00 – 7:30 pm
- Tuesday 11th November, 10:00 – 11:30 am
These sessions will continue building momentum and confidence, with reflection, shared stories, and practical action. Together, we’ll:
- Be welcomed by Proud Gloucester, who will share their vision for health, wellbeing, and community connection
- Explore findings from the LGBT Foundation’s Trans and Non-Binary Inclusion in Sports, Movement and Exercise: A Guide for Sports and Leisure Organisations
- Hear from local clubs, venues and people leading the way, with real examples of inclusive practice in Gloucestershire
- Reflect on what we’re experiencing and learning through recent activities, workshops, surveys, and conversations
- Work together to shape what comes next, agreeing shared priorities and joint actions that turn ideas into positive change and keep the network growing into 2026
If you know individuals or groups who share this commitment to creating safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for trans and non-binary people to be active, please share this invitation, especially with trans and non-binary people, or those with lived or indirect experience. Your voices and perspectives are at the heart of this work.
If you’d like to attend, but would like to know more, please email Kirsty -

Whether you joined us in July or are taking part for the first time, you’ll be part of a supportive, inclusive space where we can learn from each other and take action together to make Gloucestershire’s sport, physical activity, and movement options safe, inclusive, and welcoming for all.
