Event description
Join us for a Cumberland Conversation with Baroness Hale of Richmond

About this Event

This Spring, the UK’s recently retired President of The Supreme Court, The Rt Hon the Baroness Hale of Richmond DBE, will be joining us for a Cumberland Conversation chaired by our Chief Executive, Ed Newell.

Guest speaker

Baroness Hale retired from The Supreme Court on 18 December 2019, having been very much in the public eye during the momentous political events of 2019. She had been its President since September 2017, and was Deputy President for four years before that.

Baroness Hales’ career has been marked by a series of firsts. She has been an academic lawyer, a barrister, a law reformer and a judge. In October 2009, she became the first woman to be appointed as a Justice of The Supreme Court. She was the UK’s first female Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, the first woman to be appointed to the Law Commission (the statutory body that promotes legal reform), and the first High Court Judge to come from a primarily academic and public-service background.

After graduating from Cambridge in 1966, she taught law at Manchester University from 1966 to 1984, and practised for a while as a barrister at the Manchester Bar, before going on to specialise in Family and Social Welfare law, and become the founding editor of the Journal of Social Welfare and Family Law. She authored a pioneering casebook on The Family, Law and Society.
