About the event

Peter Mandelson has been a prominent member of the Labour Party’s leadership for the past 40 years, and assisted previous Labour Leaders in their transformation of the Party into an election-winning machine throughout the late 90s and early 2000s under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Whilst leaving government in 2010, Lord Mandelson remains a strong voice in British politics, as a member of the House of Lords, and more recently a key advisor to Labour Leader Keir Starmer’s team. Outside of the world of politics, Lord Mandelson was appointed Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University in 2016.

Lord Mandelson’s decision to come out as gay was significant not only for his personal life, but also for LGBTQ+ representation in politics. As one of the highest-ranking politicians at the time, his announcement challenged stereotypes and helped pave the way for greater acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community within the political system, and public life.

At the heart of this discussion lies not only the recognition that diversity within leadership roles is essential, but also enriching. Lord Mandelson’s involvement underscores the significance of LGBTQ+ representation in positions of power, highlighting the strides made, and the work that still lies ahead. Lord Mandelson’s own journey as an openly gay politician offers valuable insights into navigating the challenges and barriers to those in the community; whilst also offering a meaningful perspective into championing of equality.

This Pride in Leadership discussion is not just about celebrating the progress made, but the work that still needs to be done. On the cusp of a General Election, it is valuable to hear from a prominent Labour advisor on the role that the LGBTQ+ community can play in shaping the future of Business.

So join LGBTQ+ business leaders across all sectors for this special evening at Manchester Metropolitan University on 26th June 2024 for ‘In Conversation with Lord Mandelson’.
