Event description

Description

St. Bartholomew the Great welcomes acclaimed historian Tom Holland on October 9th, 2019 at 7pm, to discuss his new book “Dominion: the Making of the Western Mind”.

Holland’s book tells how Christianity, once so revolutionary and disruptive, became the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world. Today, when many have turned away from religion, the West remains saturated by Christian assumptions. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science and homosexuality are deeply rooted in the Christian seedbed. Dominion takes the broadest historical context: from Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, to tell the story of how Christianity transformed the world.

TOM HOLLAND is an award-winning historian, biographer and broadcaster. He is the author of Rubicon: The Triumph and the Tragedy of the Roman Republic, Persian Fire, Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom, and Dynasty. Holland is the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Making History. He has written and presented several TV documentaries, for the BBC and Channel 4, on subjects ranging from ISIS to dinosaurs.

£10 entrance fee (all proceeds support the maintenance and restoration of the church). Drinks available to purchase in our Cloister cafe before and after the event.
