A Decade of Creating a Sea-Change: A virtual festival

About this event

This event will spotlight the interconnected nature of grassroots marine conservation and explore why this is working so well in Cornwall. How do small organisations emerge, grow and find support? How do they work in partnership across the county? How does the 'strength in numbers' approach help? We’ll start with short presentations from the three panellists before inviting the audience to join the conversation. Our host will be the eminent marine biologist, explorer and climate optimist Heather Koldewey. Heather lives in Cornwall and is a firm believer in the power of coastal communities to drive change. Our guests will be:

  • Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust (Sue Sayer) - A multi-award winning, evidence-based marine conservation charity supporting a large network of active citizen scientists across the South West. Routine local patch seal surveys inform critical planning and policy nationally.
  • Newquay Marine Group (Gabriella Gilkes) – Founded in 2013 as a voice for the coastal environment and now 200 members strong. Their focus is on joining up the fishermen, surfers and beach users with environmental agencies and wildlife groups, to create a collective voice for protecting and celebrating the coastline around the town.
  • Polzeath Marine Conservation Group (Tina Robinson and Kathy Alford) – A small voluntary organisation based at the village’s Marine Centre with a growing network of rangers, volunteers and supporters.

We hope that communities, individuals and projects from all around the UK will find inspiration and learning from what is happening in Cornwall.
