A Curriculum for a Successful Future?

Educational, Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Computer Science in association with Technocamps and the Learned Society of Wales

February 2015 saw the publication of “Successful Futures: Independent Review of Curriculum and Assessment Arrangements in Wales” by Professor Graham Donaldson CB. This extensive report made a number of far-reaching recommendations for a root-and-branch rethinking and restructuring of the national curriculum in Wales.

The recommendations made in the Donaldson Report were accepted in full by Welsh Government, and its October 2015 white paper “A Curriculum for Wales – A Curriculum for Life” set out a plan for taking these recommendations forward and realising a new curriculum and new assessment arrangements.

One recommendation that was adopted early on was the introduction of a cross-curriculum Digital Competence Framework (DCF) – which was initially published in September 2016 – to sit alongside the existing Literacy and Numeracy Framework (LNF). This, however, was relatively low-hanging fruit.

Devising a new curriculum reflecting the richness of the recommendations made in the Donaldson Report was to require years of effort from teaching professionals across the disciplines. The resulting “Curriculum for Wales 2022” was published in draft form in April 2019, allowing for a three-month stakeholder consultancy period, before being refined and published in final form in January 2020.

In this event, the Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, will describe the new curriculum and the journey towards it. Professor Donaldson will then discuss how well the new curriculum reflects the recommendations made in his 2015 Report. Finally, Professor Tom Crick MBE will reflect on the opportunities and challenges faced by the Science and Technology Area of Learning and Experience (AoLE) Curriculum Reform Group which he chaired.

The session will end with a Q&A session with the panel of speakers.

Cwricwlwm ar gyfer Dyfodol Llwyddiannus?

Seiliau Addysgol, Hanesyddol ac Athronyddol Cyfrifiadureg mewn cydweithrediad â Technocampsa Chymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru

Ym mis Chwefror 2015, cyhoeddwyd "Dyfodol Llwyddiannus:Adolygiad Annibynnol o’r Cwricwlwm a’r Trefniadau Asesu yng Nghymru" gan yr Athro Graham Donaldson CB. Roedd yr adroddiad cynhwysfawr yn gwneud nifer o argymhellion pellgyrhaeddol ar gyfer ailfeddwl ac ailstrwythuro'r cwricwlwm cenedlaethol yng Nghymru drwyddo draw.

Cafodd yr argymhellion a wnaed yn Adroddiad Donaldson eu derbyn yn llawn gan Lywodraeth Cymru, ac ym mis Hydref 2015, roedd ei bapur gwyn, "Cwricwlwm i Gymru – Cwricwlwm am Oes", yn gosod cynllun ar gyfer bwrw ymlaen â'r argymhellion hyn a gwireddu cwricwlwm newydd a threfniadau asesu newydd.

Un argymhelliad a fabwysiadwyd yn gynnar iawn oedd cyflwyno Fframwaith Cymhwysedd Digidol traws-gwricwlwm – a gyhoeddwyd yn gyntaf ym mis Medi 2016 – i eistedd ochr yn ochr â'r Fframwaith Llythrennedd a Rhifedd cyfredol. Roedd hyn, fodd bynnag, yn eithaf hawdd ei gyflawni.

Bydd dyfeisio cwricwlwm newydd sy'n adlewyrchu cyfoethogrwydd yr argymhellion yn Adroddiad Donaldson yn gofyn am flynyddoedd o ymdrech gan weithwyr addysgu proffesiynol ledled y disgyblaethau. Cyhoeddwyd y ddogfen ganlyniadol, "Cwricwlwm i Gymru 2022", ar ffurf drafft, ym mis Ebrill 2019, gan ganiatáu cyfnod o dri mis i ymgynghori â rhanddeiliaid, cyn ei mireinio a'i chyhoeddi ar ei ffurf derfynol ym mis Ionawr 2020.

Yn y digwyddiad hwn, bydd y Gweinidog Addysg, Kirsty Williams AC, yn disgrifio'r cwricwlwm newydd a'r daith tuag ato. Yna, bydd yr Athro Donaldson yn trafod pa mor dda y mae'r cwricwlwm newydd yn adlewyrchu'r argymhellion a wnaed yn ei adroddiad yn 2015. Yn olaf, bydd yr Athro Tom Crick MBE yn myfyrio ar y cyfleoedd a'r heriau a wynebwyd gan y Grŵp Diwygio'r Cwricwlwm Maes Dysgu a Phrofiad Gwyddoniaeth a Thechnoleg, a gadeiriwyd ganddo.

Bydd y sesiwn yn dod i ben gyda sesiwn holi ac ateb gyda'r panel o siaradwyr.

  • Yr Athro Faron Moller FLSW, Cyfarwyddwr Technocamps a Sefydliad Codio Cymru
    Cyflwyniad
  • Kirsty Williams AC, Gweinidog Addysg
O "Dyfodol Llwyddiannus" i'r cwricwlwm newydd
