Internet users spend more time on facebook than on any other website. Anyone with an internet connection can set up their own website for free, in seconds.
The plethora of digital tools now available can be confusing and at first glance doesn't seem to have much to do with the real-world in which community workers operate.
In fact blogs, social networks and other tools are community development platforms. They can enhance communities, help to build skills and develop social capital.
This workshop helps those whose job it is to support community volunteers and organisations. You do not need to be an IT whizz but you will need to be comfortable using e-mail and browsing websites.
at the end of this workshop you will have:
an overview of the social media landscape, and the strengths and weaknesses of the key tools
an understanding of how communities can and do use online tools like blogs, facebook pages and flickr
the skills to support volunteers to make use of these tools themselves
an understanding of how to use these tools for personal and professional development
an overview of some of the risks and how to mitigate them
