Description

Historical Talk Series: A Fair Cop

100 years ago back in 1917 the first two female police officers were appointed in the West Midlands. Evelyn Miles and Rebecca Lipscombe, both lock-up matrons in the Birmingham City Police, became the first policewomen in May after much campaigning by women’s groups and petitioning of the Watch Committee during the early part of the First World War.

To commemorate the centenary, and the achievements of women in policing over the last 100 years, Corinne Brazier and Steve Rice (volunteers with the West Midlands Police Museum) have written a book to share the stories of the pioneer policewomen who paved the way for many to follow.

About the Authors

Corinne Brazier joined West Midlands Police on February 14th 2005 and has worked in a number of roles across the force in the Criminal Records Bureau (now the Disclosure and Barring Service), the DNA Bureau and Information Management. As the Records Manager from 2007 to 2015, Corinne implemented a new retention schedule and records management policy, set up the Information Assurance Team, created and implemented a new audit schedule and centralised external storage of records. In this role Corinne took a particular interest in historic records, overseeing a number of digitisation projects and being responsible for a change in national processes relating to the management of historic criminal records. She is currently a Demand Champion within the Corporate Asset Management Department, helping to establish requirements and facilitate estate solutions. Corinne is married with two children.

Steve Rice joined West Midlands Police on August 15th 1990. Throughout his service he has favoured the uniformed role in response, neighbourhood and partnerships functions and the Contact Management Centre. His hobbies include researching WW1 and visiting military battlefields from the two World Wars. Steve is married to a police officer who features in the book (Georgina Oakley) and has two children. Several members of his family are in the police service with his brother-in-law and sister-in-law both serving police constables in West Midlands Police.

Both Corinne and Steve volunteer at the force’s museum and after uncovering the stories of many of the early women police during a digitisation project in 2015, decided to write this book to coincide with the centenary celebrations of women police in the West Midlands in 2017. All profit from the book sales will go to various women’s charities across the West Midlands.
