Event description

Description

Life today is still much harder for the 13 million disabled people in this country than it needs to be. In 2017 disabled people still face barriers to employment and are not getting the care and support they need to live independently. Many also face extra costs as a result of their impairment or condition. Action is needed across Government to deliver meaningful change so that disabled people can achieve everyday equality and have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Our welfare system plays an important role in increasing disabled people’s financial security and in supporting those who want to work into employment. But many disabled people feel that the system is not treating them with fairness, dignity and respect, particularly when applying and going through assessments for disability benefits. Current assessment processes do not capture the barriers disabled people are facing. This means that too many disabled people are left without the support they need to overcome the challenges they are facing in their day-to-day lives.

This event will look at how we can make sure our welfare system works for disabled people so that everyone are able to get the support they need to participate fully in society.
