Description

A Fairness Convention

Wednesday 18 June 2014, 11:00 - 17:00

Keynote speech by Richard Wilkinson

(co-author of The Spirit Level)

with other high profile speakers to be announced

Lunch and refreshments will be provided

In the current climate of austerity, with budgets being cut at every level of government, inequalities widening and the cost of living crisis far from being resolved, the necessity of promoting fairness has never been more important.

New Economics Foundation (NEF), Trust for London and Islington Council would like to invite you to a National Fairness Convention. This high profile event will bring together commissioners, policy makers and councillors from across the country to explore local approaches to tackling inequality and poverty. The day will focus in particular on the recent Fairness Commissions, as well as the Camden Equality Task Force and the Birmingham Social Inclusion Process.

Through a series of plenary sessions with high profile speakers and practical workshops led by local officers, this event will promote national debate and discussion about the process and outcomes of Commissions to date; encourage practical learning and knowledge transfer across different initiatives and areas; and foster greater unity and collaboration across Commissions.

The practical workshops will focus on some of the following areas: pay and income: negotiating a living wage; implementing pay ratios; employment and jobs; housing strategies to tackle poverty and inequality and social security. There will also be an additional session for London based commissioners on the theme ‘A London Fairness Commission?’.

Agenda:

  • 10.30-11.00: Registration
  • 11.00-11.45: Introductory Session: Poverty and Inequality in the UK Today
  • 11.45-12.45: Local Approaches to Tackling Poverty and Inequality
  • 12.45-13.00: Lunch
  • 13.30-14.20: Workshops (1)
  • 14.25-15.15: Workshops (2)
