Event description

Description

With nearly 60 commands crammed into just 108 verses, it’s all too easy to hear James as a finger-wagging moralist.

But in a letter which begins with a promise that God gives wisdom ‘generously to all without finding fault’, and which ends with a reminder that ‘the Lord is full of compassion and mercy’, the heart of a pastor beats through the whole document.

As such, James calls on believers to look like real believers – mature, wholehearted, doers of God’s word, those who demonstrate their faith through how they live. And that call extends to every area of life: our attitude towards people in need, how we speak and relate to others, whether we’re friends with God or friends with the world, how we think about wealth, how we deal with conflict, how we approach suffering and sickness. In all areas of life, genuine faith acts. Genuine faith works.

Written in a vivid way, full of illustrations, drawing on Old Testament wisdom and the teaching of Jesus, James seeks to shape his readers so that they might take their place in God’s plan for all things, living differently in the world, for the world.

Join us for this day workshop exploring the letter of James. We’ll look at how the book calls us to embrace the reality of life as ‘exiles’ in the world, walking to a different beat, living wholeheartedly, serving a God who gives new birth and provides for his people.

The day will be led by Antony Billington, Head of Theology at LICC, with Neil Hudson, Imagine Project Director at LICC, and will involve a combination of input and interaction. The day will be especially suitable for church leaders and preachers who would like to reflect on how to preach James from a whole-life perspective, but will also be helpful to others who would value an opportunity to explore how this part of the Bible nurtures Christian identity and discipleship in today’s world.
