A Glossop Textile Heritage WAN.DER with Kate & Lauren.

Edmund Potter, is probably most well-known today as the grandfather of Beatrix Potter. In his own day, he was a renowned mill owner and philanthropist and MP for Carlisle.

Edmund arrived in Glossop in 1825 and set up a small calico printing works with his cousin, Charles, in a lonely haunted disused mill on the road to Manchester.

After a tricky start, he built his calico printing business up alone. He lived in Glossop at Dinting Lodge for nearly 20 years. He saw and influenced many changes in the town where cotton became King.

By the 1850s, four industrial giants dominated the town. Sidebottom’s at Waterside in Hadfield, Sumner’s at Wren Nest and the Wood’s at Howardtown focussed on spinning and weaving cotton and Edmund Potter printed on the calico produced at his Dinting Vale works.

At its height, the Dinting Vale Printworks were believed to be the largest calico printing works in the world. The colourful and beautiful prints that survive in sample books were sold around the globe.

Walk ...

The WAN.DER will be led by Kate & Lauren on Sunday 31st July at 10am, meeting at KIN.DER on Arundel Street, Glossop.

The walk will take in Glossop’s textile heritage and its effect on the landscape, the influence of Dinting Vale Printworks and the stories of mill workers. Participants will meet at KIN.DER on Arundel Street in Glossop, where the walk will start and end.

Kate, historian, archivist and a Director of the Glossop Heritage Trust, has delved into many aspects of Glossop’s rich history. She loves uncovering the history of places and sharing their countless stories.

Lauren, printmaker with a passion for creating a sense of place through print, has been working closely with Kate on uncovering the story of the Printworks since discovering the pattern books held at Derbyshire records office, as part of her PAIRINGS residency with Glossop Creates.

About the walk...

The actual walk is approximately 4km circular from KIN.DER. We will walk a mix of public footpaths and alongside busy main roads. We will stop along the way to map out how Glossop’s mill town would have looked and at particular points of interest related to the Dinting Vale Printworks and Mill town life.

This walk is moderate and requires some uphill effort. There are areas that can be slightly unstable underfoot and areas of overgrown foliage! It is important to be suitably dressed for the occasion, depending on the weather, walking shoes, waterproofs, water, snacks and warm clothes should be packed. Participants will be out for approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Talk...

**Please note these are two separate events , this ticket is for the walk ONLY, a sepatrate ticket must be bought for the talk, details can be found below**
