‘A Grand Epoch’: Augustus John and his Young Contemporaries

Curator talk by David Boyd Haycock

Augustus John (1878-1961) studied at the Slade School of Art in London where, in the 1890s, there was an extraordinary array of talented young students. As well as his sister Gwen John, they included William Orpen, Ambrose McEvoy, Spencer Gore, Percy Wyndham Lewis and Edna Clark Hall. John would call it ‘A Grand Epoch’, whilst their drawing master, Henry Tonks, dubbed it the school’s first ‘crisis of brilliance’. In this lecture Dr. Haycock will explore the story of John’s young life, and the talented friends who surrounded him.

The talk lasts approximately 60 minutes.
