A GRAVE INJUSTICE - The Naked Truth about the Shroud of Turin
Wed, April 12, 2017, 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM BST
A Carbon 14 test branded the Shroud of Turin a fake. New evidence suggests it may have got the date wrong.
Few people know the subject and background to this better than filmmaker, David Rolfe. His BAFTA-winning film, The Silent Witness, created the momentum for the Shroud to be put to the “ultimate” test of C14 to which the Church, eventually, agreed subject to five protocols designed to ensure a definitive result. These included a stipulation that the test would be performed “blind”. The Media billed it as “Science v’s Religion”. The world stood by for the result.
The extent of politicking behind the scenes between the various laboratories competing to carry out the test has only recently become clear. Not all would be selected. It has now emerged that the only scientists equipped to select the best sample area were excluded from the process, and, though the impression was given that the test would be done “blind”, failure to find visually indistinguishable samples meant that this was impossible. The sample eventually taken came from a corner - the worst possible place to represent the whole cloth as it was here that it was clutched by hand whenever it was shown.
The laboratories raced to be the first to publish a result and, when they did, made no mention of the fact that all five of the agreed protocols had been abandoned. The headlines just screamed: TheTurin Shroud is a Fake.
Rolfe’s new film, A Grave Injustice, reveals not only the details of this travesty, but also, startling new evidence that may, for the first time, shed some light on the mystery of the Shroud’s unique and unfathomable image.
“Based on this evidence there has to be grounds for an appeal.” Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterburyand now Master of Magdalen College, Cambridge.
