A guide for governors – knowing what ‘good’ or better teaching looks like

Why it’s important: Governors need to have a   secure understanding of the effectiveness of the quality of teaching learning   and assessment to secure an accurate and comprehensive understanding of   education at the school.

A   competence framework for governance’   identifies that everyone on the board   should know the importance and impact of high-quality teaching to improve   systems, techniques and strategies used to measure teaching quality, progress   and attainment.

The   governing board also needs to define the range and format of information and   data they need in order to hold executive leaders to account, including   sufficient information to provide insights into the quality and effectiveness   of teaching.

However,   for many governors, the need to have a good grasp of the quality of teaching profile without being over-dependent on the Headteacher is   confusing. This workshop considers how the range of information available to governors can help to provide   an informed picture of how effective teaching is through strategic overview, and to ensure  that the demarcation line between this strategic role of governance and the operational role of the Headteacher is  respected.

The session will cover the following:

  • How Ofsted evaluates the quality of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Teachers’ standards, and characteristics of effective teaching
  • The board’s role in setting expectations of teacher performance through performance management policies and processes
  • Being able to contribute positively to school’s self-evaluation processes
