A guide to ethical interviewing
Overview
Join shado for an online workshop and teach in on ethical interviewing. In the session Senior shado Editor, Jeevan Sangha will talk you through best practices on how to conduct ethical interviewing. We will also use the session to talk through the problems with mainstream media, harmful practices and ways to resist this, whilst ensuring care, safety and consent for all those involved.
ABOUT
When it comes to interviews, journalism too often takes a “helicopter” approach: entering communities without understanding what’s at stake, extracting stories, and leaving without building lasting relationships. This leads to misrepresentation, reinforces unequal power dynamics, and can put people at risk.
At shado, we believe in sustained, reciprocal relationships between interviewers and interviewees. This approach leads to reporting that is more accurate and representative, builds trust, and supports stronger coalitions across the left, helping create a healthier media ecosystem.
In this session, Senior Editor Jeevan Sangha will unpack how the current media landscape operates and share practical ways to conduct interviews more responsibly. Through real-world scenarios, she’ll highlight best practice and give you the chance to put what you’ve learned into action.
Because how we tell stories matters just as much as the stories themselves.
All levels welcome!
About shado: shado is a lived experience-led community of artists, writers and organisers united in the fight for social justice. shado provides a space for those across different fields, who are currently working in isolation, to co-exist. We work with a community of over 300 artists, writers, researchers and activists in over 60 countries around the world to spotlight and celebrate necessary and innovative stories. shado exists to disrupt, diversify and decolonise the current arts landscape through amplifying the voices of people on the frontline of social change, and connecting individuals and organisations which might otherwise have been working in silos. We believe collaboration across sectors is central to building out the capacity of our current movements.
